How would you react if you saw a woman wearing a full length fur coat?

Posted by bibou

Q. Yes, real fur, not faux fur. Would you think she looked elegant and sophisticated? Also would you think she was wealthy? Also would you speak any different to her if she tried talking to you, whether it be to get directions or if she came into a store at which you worked?

A. If I could confirm it was real fur, my first thought would be that's she's really rich.
I love the look of fur! It's beautiful, and I think it makes anyone look rich and fashionable.

Would I ever wear real fur? Maybe if it was previously worn by somebody else. But I wouldn't buy it off the shelves.

I wouldn't speak to her any differently, I wouldn't care if she's Oprah Winfrey.

What would you think if you saw a woman wearing a full length mink fur coat?
Q. If it matters the coat would be black, and NOT faux fur. Would you think it would look elegant, make the woman in it look sophisticated, and be classy? Or do you have something against wearing animal fur? Also, are fur coats generally associated with the very wealthy?
If it helps the coat of which I am thinking may be seen at :http://www.madisonavemall.com/products/product.aspSKU=9954BLK%2DBLK&cid=2#.UB89K83SPBE

A. A mink fur coat looks absolutely sophisticated and classy, thats why I love to wear them. Important is certainly a timeless design. I like this design http://www.madisonavemall.com/products/product.asp?SKU=8317-R-BLK&cid=132#.UB9pdKAuPjg
I think fur is nothing to make designs that depend on seasonal trends. Furs are not cheap, made in a good style you can wear them for many many years and they look fantastic. A must for me are the matching gloves that I love to combine on occasion with the right jewelry. I like to wear fur combined with leather skirts.
I like fur coats, but I also think of the animals. I buy high quality vintage fur coats, let alter them if necessary. Today there are also great faux fur coats for girls that like the look.

Does it make you feel sick when you see someone wearing fur?
Q. I am vegan, but when I see someone wearing fur it sometimes makes me feel sick. Like today i saw a woman with a fox fur hat and the tail still attached and it really grossed me out.

Do you ever feel that way?

A. A little bit. I just think of how many animals had to be trapped, shot or anally electrocuted to make their jacket/clothing. I don't trust faux fur from China either, I know for a fact that the majority of Chinese "fake fur" is actually cat and dog fur, they must mislabel it because otherwise it wouldn't sell.
However, as another user pointed out, there are areas, like in my country, where people only have access to fur as a protector from the elements. That is a lot different than people walking to a store in their mink coat.

Blues Lovin' Daddy: Don't own an SUV, my seats are cloth, my shoes aren't leather, the plastic in the jacket that I bought from my own country isn't made from whale oil (Had to roll my eyes at that one) I don't wear make up and when I do it's Happy Bunny approved and I don't know of a single vegan who would make soup out of beef bouillon cubes. People who try so hard to try and paint other people they don't even know as hypocrites make me sick.

I can tell you're a Republican, you need to constantly talk about "your rights". You accuse me of ranting and raving and yet YOU HAVE TO USE CAPSLOCK TO GET YOUR POINT ACROSS!
We have the right to be sickened by a fur coat if we want to be.

Need a fur-free/faux-fur free winter coat thats in high style and will keep one warm during a Russian winter?
Q. Women's Coat, preferably 'fitted' but warm, as Eco-friendly as possible, feminine, will rival any fur coat in style.

A. If you want to be in "high style" in Russia, then it needs to be fur (or fake fur). As to cost, buy it in Russia.

There are actually a lot of "fake fur" coats being sold there, and many of them look very "real" (some look silly, like pink vermin). But they are not sold due to the "eco-friendly" nature - they are sold to reduce the price. Real fur is "high style" there.

Or, buy a high quality "sexy" ski jacket in the US. They are popular too, but with younger women (20's).

Do you and your spouse do naughty things at other people's weddings?
Q. So, I had a cousin get married this weekend and my wife and I contemplated sneaking off into a coat closet or someplace for some loving.

Would that be inappropriate?

A. Yes. With my spouse and other prior dates. The coat closet was by far more comfortable and a little more erotic than say the storage room or janitors closet.
The drawback to the coat room was that I did feel sorry for whatever woman was wearing the faux rabbit fur coat. I needed something to wipe up with, and well that felt the best.

Where can I buy a plus size thermal ski jacket?

Posted by bibou

Q. I'm a size 2X and can't find a warm thermal ski jacket anywhere. I am not going skiing but need a warm coat for Alaska weather to visit my nephew and grandneices. I heard that the thermal omnitech feature in the Columbia brand ski jackets are the best but the stores I visited only sell XL as the largest. Woolen or down coats aren't as warm as these omnitech ski jackets. Any recommendations?

A. Try:
Columbia online
Zappos.com (they seem to be able to help you find anything, even if they don't sell it)
Cabelas
REI (Recreational Equipment Inc).
LLBean
Eddie Bauer
Don't get stuck on wanting just that particular jacket. It's -45 in Fairbanks today and we're wearing down parkas, mittens, snowpants, hats and boots.

Where do you find good ski jackets for tall, thin girls?
Q. I can't find a ski jacket with long enough arms. I have a pretty small frame, but I'm tall and lanky. I'm tired of buying extra large jackets just so the sleeves are long enough. Then, the rest of the jacket just feels huge and bulky. Does anybody know of an online website where I could order one with longer arms?

A. try burton, the north face, columbia, or any other major ski/snowboard brand. they should carry jackets that fit you. i would recommend going down to your local snowboard shop and check with them.

burton: women outerwear: http://www.burton.com/Gear/Default.aspx#/womens/outerwear/over/

the north face: http://thenorthface.com/opencms/opencms/tnf/gear-shop-subcategory.jsp?category=21&site=NA&subcategory=211&language=en

columbia: http://columbia.com/SubCategory.aspx?top=2&cat=210&viewAll=false

if none of these work, try somewhere else: dogfunk.com, zumiez.com, theclickworldwide.com, ccs.com, or any other site.

good luck

How to get grease off a white ski jacket?
Q. My wife got a white ski jacket for Christmas and while wearing it out must have rubbed against a car or something that had black grease on it. We have washed it twice in the washer, but not much change. I gently took some liquid soap and tried to brush it in and rinse off with warm water, and still not much improvement. Does anyone know a good way to get black grease off of whites?

A. Rub some dishwashing liquid into the stain. Let that sit for about 20 minutes. Then launder as usual.

It doesn't matter which brand of dishwashing liquid you use. Most people recommend Dawn, but I've found that others work just as well...Joy, Palmolive, Ajax, even some store brands, like Kirkland.

Dishwashing liquid is made to remove grease. Laundry detergent is not. The dishwashing liquid will remove the grease.

What is a good waterproofness and moisture permeability of a ski jacket?
Q. I bought a ski jacket and it has a waterproofness of 20000 mmH2O and a moisture permeability of 4000g/m^2/24 hours. Is this good and what is the difference between the two?? Thanks for your answers

A. Waterproofness is a measure of keeping moisture out. Permeability is the ability to let sweat out without condensation. In both cases, the higher the number the better the performance.

My theory is that 10,000 is the minimum on both scales. If you can control your temperature by layering etc 4,000 permeability may be enough.

Are polypropylene good to wear beneath ski jacket?
Q. I am going to the snow this Sunday and I need to know is polypropylene long-sleeves any good?

I heard it's not recommended to wear cotton beneath your ski jacket as the moisture is absorbed and makes you wet.

What is good to wear under ski pants?

Also, what should you and shouldn't wear?

Thank you.

A. Polypropylene was one of the first synthetic fabrics for long underwear. It works well for sports like skiing. Early polypropylene had a reputation for retaining body odor. Newer fabrics and coatings help.

Polypropylene and similar fabrics are good for your base layer, tops and bottoms. I think that a fleece sweater is a great insulation layer. Don't forget to cover your head; I always wear a helmet.

Cotton is a poor choice for skiing. Wool is OK if you can tolerate it (it is too itchy for me).

What do you wear under your snowpants when skiing? ?

Posted by bibou

Q. I was just wondering what all of you out there wear under you snowpants when skiing. At the moment I wear under amour pants and a top. I am starting to feel that its a bit too restricted in body movement because I am starting to get into trick skiing big time. So if you would give me some ideas that would be great. Thanks!

A. Under my insulated ski pants, usually just a pair of nylon/spandex blend climbing/hiking pants. Under my non-insulated ski pants, usually 200 weight Polartec fleece and Duofold long underwear if it is really cold. Not restrictive at all. A lot cheaper than Under Armor and Capaline as well. I also wear wicking nylon boxers.

How do you stay warm in winter? What about layers of clothing, or routines?
Q.

A. http://www.pathfindersrus.com/cold_weather.htm

Wearing lots of clothes in the cold and removing them layer by layer as you get warm up with activity is an age-old idea. With modern garments, this system gives you a versatile, thermally-efficient, and convenient way of dressing for all outdoor activities. By applying the layering approach you'll find that the clothing you put together for your camping trip will serve you in other seasons as well.

Clothing is classified in three layering categories (the three "W's"), as follows:

1) The Wicking Layer keeps a comfortable climate next to your skin by wicking away sweat,
2) the Warmth Layer absorbs moisture and provides insulation,
3) the Wind Layer protects against wind, snow and sun.

Here is a checklist describing the functions of each layer of clothing you'll need.

WICKING LAYER

One synthetic long underwear top
One synthetic long underwear bottom
An extra set of each (not essential but recommended)

FUNCTION: While the long underwear layer provides some insulation, its primary function in winter activities is to draw perspired moisture away from the skin to prevent chilling. Wet skin loses heat 26 times faster than dry skin. If you are active and perspiring, the new synthetic fibers like polypropylene, Thermastat, Duofold, Capilene keep your skin far drier than absorbent natural materials like cotton, wool or silk. Rather than absorbing moisture, synthetic fibers work by repelling water. They actually wick the water towards the exterior where it can dissipate in other clothing layers and evaporate.

WARMTH LAYER

One thin insulating top (i.e., fleece shirt, sweater)
One thick insulating top (i.e., fleece anorak warm hooded jacket)
One pair insulating pants
One insulated vest (not essential but recommended, particularly for camping trips)

FUNCTION: Warmth results from trapping body-warmed air and keeping it from swirling around to prevent heat from escaping. This layer should have ample fabric loft and the cut should be roomy to hold more body-warmed air. For active use, the reliability of an insulation when damp is especially important. In this regard, synthetics are superior to their natural counterparts because they retain more loft and insulation while absorbing less water. Duck and goose down is virtually useless when damp. And because half or more of your body heat can be lost through your head, it's best if your thick insulating top includes a hood. An insulated vest offers an extra edge of torso warmth and is easy to stow -- an oversized one is ideal because you can slip it over your jacket for rest stops and lunch breaks.

Thin insulating top options include synthetic fleece sweater or shirt, turtleneck with zippered collar, wool shirt, light V-neck wool or wool blend sweater, polyester pile pullover. Thick top options include long, (preferably hooded) parka or pullover made of thick polyester pile or nylon fleece, or having synthetic insulation like Quallofil, Hollofil or Polarguard. For your legs, choose thick polyester pile or heavy wool pants, or pants insulated with synthetic batting. (Avoid cotton tops and cotton pants like jeans, corduroys and khakis as they hold moisture and feel clammy in the cold.)

WIND LAYER

One windshell jacket
One pair windshell pants

FUNCTION: A shell may be your most important garment in the layering system. Outer shells are designed to protect you from wind, snow and even sun. Furthermore, windshells can add up to 25 degrees of warmth in calm weather and twice that in windy weather. Choose a long, hooded lightweight jacket or pullover made of 60/40 cloth, Supplex, Sierra cloth, or other breathable nylon or polyester blends. Three basic types of cloth are used in constructing shells;

1) cloth that is windproof but not waterproof, thus allowing maximum evaporation of perspired moisture (uncoated nylon or nylon/cotton blends). This choice is the best for winter use.

2) cloth that is windproof and waterproof but allows no evaporation (rubberized rain coats, urethane coated nylon). Unbreathable rain jackets are unacceptable for winter use. Unsure about you have? Put your mouth against the fabric to see if you can force any air through it.

3) cloth that is both windproof and waterproof but allows some evaporation through microscopic pores (Gore-Tex, Entrant and similar fabrics). They work well if rate of perspiration is low and if outside temperature is above freezing. Below freezing the pores tend to clog with frost. They are acceptable, though not ideal, for winter use.

HAND WEAR

One or more pairs insulating mittens
One or two pairs shell mittens
One or two pairs liner gloves (not essential but recommended, especially for camping)

FUNCTION: Again the layering system applies. A tight-fitting, thin liner glove wicks away moisture and allows you full dexterity when you need to work with mittens off. Thick mittens serve as the insulating layer. Over that you need a water resistant shell. Long cuffs help seal out the wind. Choose one or two pairs Thermax or polypropylene liner gloves plus warm mitts made of wool, wool/nylon blend, Polar Plus or other polyester pile. Overmitts made of leather (called "choppers") are the most durable for camping trips though nylon shells (made of Supplex or Cordura) are lighter. Mittens that combine insulation and shell in one, such as snowmobile mitts, also work but are more difficult to dry.

BOOTS (this applies for extremely cold weather)

Snow boots with removable liners
One extra pair of liners (for camping trips)
Insulated camp booties (for evening use on camping trips)

FUNCTION: Don't skimp here. Cold feet on the trail will cause a dip in your fun meter faster than anything else. 'Pac boots' with rubber soles and leather or Cordura nylon uppers are best. Avoid boots with rubberized uppers (they don't breath) and steel shanks (the metal tends to conduct heat away unless the soles are specially insulated). Removable liners are essential (the ones with built-in liners can't be dried). Foam liners dry faster than felt ones. Removable foam insoles add an extra edge of warmth. Make sure the fit of the boot and liners is not tight - you should be able to wiggle your toes with ease. We recommend wearing one pair liner socks and two pairs insulating socks when you're getting fitted for boots. Tight boots mean cold feet. Choose LaCrosse, Sorel, Timberland, Boundary or other quality snow boots with rubber soles and lowers, leather or breathable nylon uppers, removable felt or foam liners and rated to at least -40.

Inevitably, your boots and liners will become dampened by perspiration during the day on a Wintergreen trip and must be dried each evening. That's why --for camping trips-- we also recommend bringing lightweight camp booties insulated with Polarguard, Quallofil, or down (available through most camping stores). They're not essential but they sure make your feet sing after a day on the trail.

SOCKS

2 or more pairs light liner socks
2 or more pairs thick insulating socks

FUNCTION: The layering system applies here as well. Synthetic liner socks wick perspired moisture away from your feet while heavy socks provide insulation. Choose Thermax, polypropylene or Olefin liner socks along with polyester, wool or wool/nylon hunting socks

HEADWEAR

One lightweight ski hat
One warm hat or balaclava (an open face mask)
Neck gaiter (not essential but wonderfully versatile for keeping neck & face warm)

FUNCTION: Over half of your body heat can be lost through your head. Choose a lightweight wool, wool blend, polypropylene or Thermax ski hat; thick insulating hat, cap or mask. Optional headwear items that you may choose to bring include a scarf, ear muffs, neck gaiter and ear warmers.

Most insulatating base layer material for extreme cold wear? What brands are there? Links?
Q. Ive been shopping, and I need a good base layer for extreme cold (-20 ° C / 4.00 ° F) .
Theres Patagonia/Merino/Synthetics/Polypropylene/Waffle etc.
im confused!
i just need a good one for extreme cold to hike and to wear to sleep.

A. I sort of use a double base layer. I wear a shortsleeve T-shirt and boxers both made from EMS Techwick (Teckwick level 1.) Then layer Techwick Level 3 long underwear on top of that. Both are available at http://www.ems.com

I lead daily hikes and snowshoe trips in Northern Pennsylvania and I also ski all throughout the Northeastern USA. Techwick is very warm and wicks very well. I was wearing this combination under wool pants and with a wool sweater and a Primaloft vest one day in January when the temperature was +3F. After 3 miles I was sweating.

Techwick has similar qualities to Patagonia's Capaline. It is a bit less expensive and I think it does just as good a job. I have used the Patagonia stuff in the past, but since the EMS stuff is less expensive, I don't buy the Patagonia anymore.

When I used to live in Vermont, winter camping was fairly common. I spent many nights outside at temps around -10F. I mostly wear midweight fleece pants and a fleece hooded sweatshirt if it is that cold, but I have a -20F rated sleeping bag too, so often I would just sleep in a fresh set of Techwick. All of the fleece is standard Polarfleece 100 weight from Malden Mills. I have several sets made by different companies, (LL Bean, EMS, White Sierra, Goody's of Vermont, and a local place from Pennsylvania.)

These have suited me well for the past 7 years.

I don't really have any opinion on Under Armor. Although someone who is aged 17 will undoubtedly write something swearing it is the BEST. I wouldn't know...but they do have one hell of a marketing campaign. It may very well be great stuff, but with the vast majority of their customers being under the age of 20, I have to wonder how many other brands of long underwear the Under Armor fans have actually tried.

I've also used Duofold. This stuff is pretty good for wearing when you are not active. I use it deer hunting sometimes. Once I start moving around, if I'm wearing it, I get really warm and it does not breathe as well as the EMS and Patagonia stuff.

Smartwool long underwear is also very good according to my friend who is also an avid skier and winter camper. It too is expensive, but it works very well. Almost all of my socks (including dress socks) are Smartwool. The stuff wicks like nothing else I've ever used. I started using Smartwool, which is a Merino wool blend, in 1999 and it is the best stuff. I've used ragg wool, Thorlo synthetic socks, and am now testing socks from Teko. Smartwool still has my vote as the best stuff for your feet. I stay warm and dry all day. I also have a Smartwool hat...again, it is warm and it wicks.

Stay warm and stay away from anything cotton!

Can someone give me a camping list?
Q. I need a camping list for clothes ONLY. The weather there will be in the 70s/ 80s.
oh its 4 3 dayz

A. Zip off/convertible nylon pants
Swimming trunks (Or just wear zipped off shorts and wear until dry)
Underwear (synthetic is best)
Short sleeved polyester t-shirt (Duofold)
Long sleeved nylon/polyester/rayon collared button up shirt (If it's too sunny or slightly cooler)
Running/Cross training shoes
Socks
Baseball cap
Sunglasses
Windbreaker jacket (for wind)
Fleece or quilted insulated vest, jacket or sweater (for cold/evenings)
Coated nylon poncho or Gore-Tex type jacket (for heavy rain)
Beanie hat (for night/cold)

What is the best base layer brands for backpacking? Whats the warmest and lightest?
Q.

A. A base layer is usually what you wear on top of your under pants and hike in all day. Still, one could switch out their shirt and pants for long underwear-type clothes, and then those would become the base layer and your shirt and pants would go on next.

For most hiking conditions I wear a 100% polyester t-shirt made by Duofold or Mountain Hardwear, and 100% nylon zip off cargo style pants from REI, Campmor, or Sportif USA. If it's hot I'll zip off the pants to make shorts. http://www.rei.com/product/680108
http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/10016,21812_bbbSportifandbandbandb-USA-Truckee-Convertible-Nylon-Pants-For-Men.html

In the tropics or desert I'd wear a button front long sleeved 100% synthetic shirt like the Mountain Hardwear Canyon Shirt. http://www.altrec.com/shop/detail/16628/

If it was winter I have a lightweight 100% polyester Marmot long underwear zip-t. And REI 100% polyester long underwear pants. http://www.rei.com/OM/style/754884?cm_mmc=cse_froogle-_-datafeed-_-product-_-na&mr:trackingCode=792139D6-30C5-DC11-BE2A-001422107090&mr:referralID=NA

Can men wear light colored leggings in public?

Q. Like a white or light gray colored pair of leggings. The reason i ask is because I dont wear anything under them and my bulge is more visible with light colors than it is when i wear my black ones. Can that be indecent exposure? Also, do women find a man in leggings to be acceptable? Im not gay i just love the feel of leggings against my bare skin.
BTW, i have very nice toned legs.

A. Wear them with shorts and a sweatshirt, its a nice casual outfit. Guys can do this too. No sausage.

Where can I find plaid shirts like this?
Q. Plaid shirts that are long and flowy yet femininely shaped.. Haha, I don't know.
Just plaid shirts that look good with skinny jeans or denim leggings. Thanks a ton!

A. Hi, after picking the material and fit of the shirts, you can pick the right color of plaid that you want. Red and black plaid is the most traditional and works especially well in colder months. Other traditional looks involve muted colors like navy, gray, brown, tan, cream, and white. Light pastels and bright colors work best for warmer months.

What clothes do you HATE seeing people wear?
Q. For example, I hate leggings. EVERY girl wears them now, whether black or grey or "jeggings". And hardly any know how to cover their butts in them. Leggings are not trousers!

A. for women/girls: Agree with Leggings, wearing them with limited clothes like dresses, long shirts ok. But don't push it by just wearing that and a simple shirt. Just stay home, you are embarrassing yourself. Also, low cut shirts of girls that have big cleavage, trust me nobody wants to see at what point they just come out, since you already have left them half out. excessive makeup and oily hair is probably the worst combination of all the above, shower & remember make up helps, but adding more wont make miracles happen.

for Men/boys: pants that show your boxers, seriously? Do we wanna see that? too tight pants, it just looks miserable when they walk. White shoes>??? ive seen some that seriously look ridiculous! Men with excessive cologne & gel? yuck! Just shower, its cheaper too! & SHave!

Are men starting to wear tights for fashion?
Q. A few times now I've seen guys wearing tights with shorts, and it looked like their regular clothes, not for sports. The tights looked like the fashion kind women wear with skirts, not the sports kind. I've seen it at the mall and other regular places. Is this a new style for guys? Do you see it where you live?

A. I've seen this at high-street stores such as uni-qlo and i think the reason is because male fashion is becoming extremely repetitive with black skinny jeans and white t-shirts, i think they feel its time for a change. I have the same attitude, black skinny jeans are so dull now and if every men started to wear leggings and shorts, i would!

How to make a wonder-woman costume by hand for school ?
Q. I need to pick a superhero for school . and we have to go with our dress code . so i picked wonder woman . i was thinking to get some blue sweats ( because were not allowed to were leggings ) from walmart and get that fabric paint and put white stars on them and then get a red vneck and and paint that gold where it needed to be. Please help me with more idea .and we cant were no spagittttis straps shown . please help

A. That would probably work, but what you could also do is get tighter blue pants and then you can wear boots like wonder woman does over them. Also you should get a cape and a headband, and be sure to wear bright red lipstick and blue eyeshadow.

Any difference from wearing ballet tights or leggings for ballet class?

Posted by bibou on Friday, December 28, 2012

Q. Is there any difference from wearing leggings or ballet tights during a ballet class, does one keep warmer that the other or so?

A. Tights make it easier for a ballet teacher to see your muscles. As you are a male dancer, you need to wear a dance belt and men's tights which a bit thicker than women's tights. If you are a serious dancer, you don't wear leggings.
You can read more about men's dance where here.

@Dougaa- Leggings are not the same as men's footless tights. At least they are not called that in the USA. You can wear footless tights in class with white ballet socks but not the thicker leggings.

& SHave!

Any Disadvantages for using a Ski suit as on outfit?

Posted by bibou

Q. Im looking to buy a ski suit since it would save be from buying jacket and a pants since i found one used for cheaper. Are there any disadvantages for using them?

A. Let's just say that growing up on a number of ski teams, we had a whole variety of names for people who wore the one pieces. None of them were nice.

Besides, a one piece will always be more limited in your mobility than a separate pant / jacket combo. I tried skiing bumps once in a one piece and gave myself the wedgie from hell.

What is a nice pair of ski pants?
Q. I'm looking for a nice pair of ski pants, but without going over my budget! $60 at MOST. I'm being cheap because my spyders ripped. Any good brands or ideas?

A. You could easily spend a few hundred dollars on good ski pants. If you want to keep it under $60, you should probably go with columbia. They usually offer pretty good quality for the price. I've been using columbia pants for a while cause i do a lot of tree skiing so I don't want to spend a lot of money on pants that are going to get shredded by the end of the season.

Does anyone know where i can buy cheap or use cross country ski pants?
Q. I want pants that are preferably the Swix brand or any other ski brand:)

A. Try TJ MAXX first off......and then go for stores like REI, Christi Sports, or something!

How much does skiing equipment cost?
Q. Can you rent it? If so, how much is it usually? I'm going on a skiing trip with my friend in late January and my family is low on money, so I'm trying to earn the money to make it work. Also, what other gear do I need (hats, gloves, etc)? I'm not sure where we're going for it.

A. Unfortunately, for the beginner skier, a ski trip of any length will cost you about $75-$100 a day for tickets and rentals. Try to pre-buy the tickets. Multiple day tickets purchased at the same time generally are cheaper and off-resort rentals are sometimes $10-$15 less than the resort rental shop. Find out where you are going and try to get the ticket prices off the website.

Gore-Tex gloves and pants are expensive. You can get several pairs of less expensive fleece gloves and swap out gloves if yours get soaked. Put Sno-Seal (beeswax) on some leather gloves and that will work too. Carhartt also makes a leather, waterproof glove that is a lot cheaper than a high-end Gore-Tex skiing glove. Mittens are always warmer than gloves.

Water resistant ski pants can be gotten for under $60 and you can pick up some decent ski socks at backcountry.com. A lot of styles are 50% off.

where can I buy cheap leggings for a ski trip?
Q. I need them to wear under my poyester pants because we have to layer!

A. Go to a sporting goods store like Big 5
They have Under Armour leggings
I'm going to get some

Where can I find toddler thermal underwear?

Posted by bibou

Q. I am looking for anything that is similar to Long Johns for toddlers, I've tried looking on the internet but am not getting many results. Just wondering if anyone knows of any stores that carry anything like that, or even what else I could call them when I search. I've tried thermal underwear as well. Thanks for any helpful responses!

A. I would go with the small tank tops or one of those small pj's that fit skin tight and those leggings in the girls area

Do most people wear thermal underwear when going skiing?
Q. My friend and I are having an arguement about if thermal underwear is needed for going skiing. He says that everyone uses it. I completely disagree so we decided to check. Please answer back soon and tell us who is right.

A. Most people do wear a base layer of some sort. Under Armour Cold Gear Base 3.0 is a common one but there are many others

how do i pick which thermal underwear to buy?
Q. there are so many on ebay. and i don't see any in the malls i go to (so i can't try the thermal underwear on in person) in this case, how do i pick which thermal underwear to buy? any pointers?

A. I buy all of mine at http://www.hellyhansen.com/ they have a size guide. Even if you are off by a little bit on the size it doesn't really matter base layers are meant to fit tight and they have alot of stretch. I buy the 3/4 length dry ski baselayers for most days and the full length warm baselayers for those days when the temps really drop but that's only like one or two days a year the 3/4 ones under your ski pants will keep you warm right down to -5f

Where can I buy old style thermal underwear for a male adult?
Q. I need to get old style thermal underwear. Where can I get this? It's not Under Armor or anything like that, it has to have that ribbing or whatever. I'm not really sure what it is, it was just called old style.

Please provide store name or website. Thank you.

A. i have found that military surplus thermals are about the nest you can buy. especially the pants with the stirrups to keep them from riding up. so you might try an army surplus store.

if you are looking for a "union suit" which is the one piece with the trap door in the back, you can buy those at walmart or any outdoors outfitter.

look closely, many of the new thermals still have that same material on one side, but they sew a cotton knit material to the other side. so you may have seen them and just didnt look close enough to see the material you area talking about.

Are you supposed to wear underwear with thermal underwear?
Q. I'm going skiing and will have a set of thermal underwear on. Should I wear boxers under the thermal underwear or not?

A. You should wear something so you don't get chapped skin. Thermals are kinda rough on the bare skin. Especially there. Extra sensitive down there. Boxers might be uncomfortable. If you can breathe in Tity Whiteys I'd wear them. If you choke in em, wear a size larger. The thermals kinda keep ya in there tight already so you don't wanna die trying to move down the slopes. (Trying to fix your boxers or give yourself some air in the tight titys.)

WHERE CAN I FIND CUTE PLUS SIZE SNOW GEAR?

Posted by bibou

Q. I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED CUTE SNOWBOARD PANTS BUT I AM OVERWEIGHT. IS THERE ANYWHERE I CAN FIND SOME CUTE SNOWBOARD PANTS?

A. My sister is pretty big. We always found pretty fashionable stuff at ski-specific shops through out the city. Your best bet is to stay away from sport check and walmart. Instead stay at your ski cellars and ski-west type store. you will find something eventually.

Brand stores such as Helly Hansen and the north face are quite good too. As I do not know your size its hard for me to make recommendations but trendier stuff like armada pants tend to fit a bit bigger because that is what is in style at the moment.

Cheap Skiing Clothing?
Q. I'm plus sized so its hard to find active wear but i love to ski and was wondering if anybody knew of anywhere i could get cheaper plus sized gear?

A. You can get perfectly usable ski clothes in any size at places like Kohl's and other discount department stores. I particularly recommend Kohl's - I've gotten very good gear there - base layers (inexpensive versions of stuff like UnderArmor) and fleeces. They also carry Columbia jackets, which, despite lacking the cache (and some features) of high end brands, are perfectly serviceable for skiing. Look for knit gathers at the cuffs and zipper pockets. All of these are very reasonably priced and you can catch them at this time of year deeply discounted as they prepare to move in the spring and summer stuff. I usually look in places that cater to hunters for socks - they work fine for me - again, always get moisture-wicking.

The only real challenge will be in getting a good pair of ski pants - this one is tougher because they are hardly carried by anyone except for stores that cater to skiers. Try the sierra trading post, an on-line retailer that carries close outs and odd lots: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/

You can buy very decent ski clothing that will work very well without paying the prices you see in ski shops.

i am planning to go to mountain ski in april, denver colorado u.s.a.?
Q. but i live in the manila, philippines where there is no place i can buy ski wears like ski pants and boots. do you know if i can rent it in denver? do you know how much for a week? i know sometimes it is much cheaper to just buy but i don't want to bring it back to manila because i don't know if i will ever use it again. plus next time we go ski again maybe my kids-8,11, and 14 yrs old will need different sizes.

A. Ski equipment such as skis, poles, and boots can easily be rented, clothing cannot. Since you are not going to need the clothing again, I suggest you plan to spend a few hours hitting the Goodwill and Savers used clothing stores. They often have clothing that would be suitable for spring skiing. You might also look at stores such as TJ Maxx and Marshall's where they may still have some winter clothing on the mark down racks. You can donate the clothes when you leave.

Can you rent snow jackets for skiing/snowboarding?

Posted by bibou

Q. I am planning to visit my friend in Reno and want to try skiing/snowboarding. I am not sure I want to purchase a snow jacket if I will not use it often, so can they be rented? Thanks in advance.

A. Generally not at US resorts. People from the UK ask this all the time, so maybe it's something that is common outside the US.

In all honesty you can get by with a $50 jacket and $50 pair of snow pants if you are just learning...maybe even cheaper if you hit up Walmart or Kmart. Most 1st timers don't even bother with getting snow clothing. Track pants, fleece jackets, hoodies under windbreakers, bomber jackets, jeans, fatigue pants, Carhartt bibs, hunting clothes...you name it, I've seen it on the beginner slopes.

Another thing you could do is ask your friends if they have anything they can loan you. Anyone who skis often more than likely has a closet full of stuff just sitting around. (or maybe I'm just strange because I have four pairs of ski pants and half-a-dozen jackets suitable for winter sports?)

What are the rented equipments for Skiing?
Q. I am going to go to the Poconos soon and I am going to rent ski equipments. What do they usually provide so that I can go out and buy the other things they don't give out in the rent. And where can I buy the ski items that are not given to me for rent?

A. Don't spend too much especially if you don't plan on taking up skiing, you're just doing it for this winter because it sounds like fun but you don't think you'll go again next year.
Or if you do think you will take it up then:

First if you rent at a shop outside of the ski resort, (they have a lot in the poconos, stand alone ski shops that rent as well) It will be a lot cheaper to rent from them than to rent from a ski resort.
Also most ski resorts require you to bring the equipment back at the end of the day, where as at stand alone shops will let you rent them for 1 day, 3 days, a week etc. and you can bring them back to your house over night so you're ready to go the next morning.

The equipment that you will rent will be:
Ski's, Ski Boots, and optionally ski poles.
Poles aren't entirely neccesary, I never used them but once but they only cost an extra few dollars to rent.
(DONT drop them off the ski lift by accident! Once you do that unless you're right over a trail, they're gone for good and you'll have to pay the deposit on them)

As for things you need to provide while skiing:
Some sort of snow pants, please please please don't wear jeans everyone will laugh at you and also when you fall (which you will) you will find out just how much extra water weight you can carry that collects on the jeans.

I imagine you already have some sort of snow pants and water proof winter snow jacket that maybe you use while sledding back at home?
If not, try to borrow them from someone you know because they tend to be expensive.

Gloves! you will need water PROOF winter gloves. You should be able to find a pair at walmart or any store for less than $20, just make sure they are pretty water proof.

Socks, the longer and thicker/warmer...the better. Double up on them too, wear those socks when you go to rent your equipment so you can make sure the boot fits right. Ask an employee to help you with everything and that you've never ski'd before.

Other things you will need: Warm hat (not a baseball cap, a beanie type hat), Something to cover your face whether it be a balaclava or a scarf or you can easily get wind burn, goggles...goggles are really optional, but if it's snowing outside while you're skiing you won't be able to see anything! You'll be squinting the whole time plus all the white is extremely bright. So try to borrow some or buy a cheap pair at walmart.

That all you should need, just remember to dress in layers, just a winter coat isn't enough you should wear a hoody under that as well.
I also highly suggest you take a lesson, they're usually an hour and a half long. If you take it on a weekday it will be cheaper as well, but it will really make your trip funner if you learn to ski correctly.
Remember, if all else fails...pizza pie!
(You'll learn that in class)
Good luck.

How much do I need to invest to start skiing???
Q. I llive only 30 minutes from Mt. Hood and I want to learn how to ski, I only have gloves and that's it! I have Levis but don't want to get laughed off the hill. How much sould I expect to pay and where should I start?..Thank you

A. Well now is a good time to go shopping, because a lot of places will have end of season sales.
Skis and bindings: $300 and up
Boots:$100+ (make sure they feel good)
Snow Pants: $30+
Jacket: $50 for a cheap one, $100+ for a better one
Goggles: $20+ (important)

So you are looking at over $500 for gear at the least. You can easily spend twice that depending on the gear you choose. Then you also need to get the pass to the mountain.
Just start sopping around some ski shops and comparing prices.

A. You could easily spend a few hundred dollars on good ski pants. If you want to keep it under $60, you should probably go with columbia. They usually offer pretty good quality for the price. Why do women at the gym in spandex pants always rub their butts?

Posted by bibou

Q. I guess you can say I have a bit of a staring problem. Today I was at the gym, and a woman in black spandex pants was riding on the bike in front of me. Every few moments she'd adjust her waistband and her thong underneath, and then would rub her buttocks. Then many times there would be no adjusting -- she'd just rub her buttocks. I was behind her for maybe 5 minutes, and I counted about 10 butt-rubs.

But this isn't the first time I've seen something like this. I see women in spandex leggings & capri pants, and will rub their butt at the end of their workouts. Why do they do that? Is this from being tired? Do they like the feel of spandex?

Any women that do this, please explain why this happens.

A. its not being tired or really liking the "rubbing". Certain pairs of pants makes legs feel itchy, stinging, irritated especially in the thighs. The pants are usually of fabric other than cotton. The cause is thought to be the fabric finishes or formaldehyde that remains in the cloth, but laboratory tests don't bear this out. Still, some people have itchy legs wearing anything other than 100% plain cotton denim.

Another, It is the rise in body temperature that produces the itching, swelling, and small hives that some people experience. People who have this may also experience the same reaction in hot tubs, saunas, and see that they are more likely to get it on hot days. This rarely leads to anaphylaxis - the life-threatening drop in blood pressure that can be fatal in major allergic reactions.

the next time u see somebody rubbing off their butts, u know...

A. Hi LS! It's for one of the following reasons: 1) They're sweaty, 2) To get the blood flowing and reduce cellulite, or 3) to get attention.

:) Happy workout!

What is the Disneyland dress code you must have to work there?
Q. Also, if you work there and get a gate pass, can you only bring friends in during park hours or after?

A. Fingernails should be clean. If polish is used, it should be an appropriate, neutral color. Charms or decals on fingernails are not permitted. Fingernails should not exceed one-fourth of an inch (approximately 6 mm) beyond the fingertip.

Hair should be neatly combed and arranged in a classic, easy-to-maintain style. Extreme styles are not permitted.
Hair below shoulder length should be confined if it falls forward over the face while working.
Conservative braided hairstyles without beads or ornamentation are permitted.
Hair products may be used to create a soft, natural hairstyle within these guidelines.
Shaving of the head or any portion of the head or eyebrows is not permitted.
Artificial hair is permitted if it looks natural and meets all of the above requirements.
If makeup is worn, it should be applied in a blended manner and in appropriate, neutral colors.
Hair accessories no larger than one inch (approximately 2.5 cm) wide (approximately 2.5 cm) wide and four inches (approximately 10 cm) long are acceptable. Headbands, hair ribbons, or hair ties are acceptable, provided that they are no wider than one inch (2.5 cm).
Hair accessories must be a neutral color (silver, gold, tortoiseshell, black, clear or pearl) or a solid color that matches the costume.
No more than three small accessories may be worn at once.

Rings, earrings and a classic business-style wristwatch are permitted.
Necklaces, bracelets and ankle bracelets are not permitted. A medical-alert necklace, bracelet or ankle bracelet is acceptable.
Earrings must be a simple, matched pair in gold, silver or a color that blends with the costume. One earring in each ear is permitted. Earrings may be clip-on or pierced, post, hoop or dangle and must be worn on the bottom of the earlobe. Earrings may not exceed the size of a quarter.
Only one ring on each hand is permitted, with the exception of a wedding set. A ring may be worn on any finger.

Professional options for women include dress pants with a classic style blouse or sweater, skirted or pants suit, dress with or without a jacket, and business-style walking shorts with a blouse and jacket or vest.
A blazer or suit may be required at certain times, depending on your work location and the nature of your role. Check with your area leader for more information.
Sleeveless tops and dresses are permitted provided the sleeve width is no less than three inches (approximately 7.6 cm). Tank tops, spaghetti straps, and other casual styles are not acceptable.
Traditional and professional style mid-calf Capri pants are permitted. Cotton twill, cargo, leggings or other casual styles of Capri pants do not present a professional image and are therefore not permitted.
Cotton twill full-length pants (i.e., Dockers®, khakis) are permitted only if they are neatly pressed, creased, and appear to be professionally laundered.
Non-costumed Cast Members are permitted to wear a short- or long-sleeved oxfordstyle dress shirt with property-specific embroidered logo. A blazer is optional.

Clothing not permitted includes polo or golf-style shirts (except for Sports and Recreation Cast), cargo-style pants, t-shirts, sundresses, leggings, casual shorts, wrap-around shorts, one-piece rompers and garments made of denim fabrics.
Winter jackets and coats should present a professional appearance and should be made of fabrics traditionally acceptable in business. For example, wool, leather and micro fiber offer good choices. Denim, nylon, satin and other casual fabrics would not meet these professional guidelines.
Clothing Lengths

I am a male who loves to wear in public tight lycra spandex, is this ok?
Q. Just wondering if it's okay for a male to wear leggings, bike shorts etc ? A lot of women wear lycra, especially swimsuits, capri pants and leggings and I want to do the same. Thanks

A. I can't believe why so many people jump straight to gay when they hear/see guy(s) wearing spandex... Why is this?
I'm straight, male, and have an athletic body. I think its perfectly ok to wear spandex in public, just as long as you keep yourself "decent" and nothing is showing you'll be fine. What you could do is just wear athletic wear along with it to show that you prob got done with a workout in the gym, from a bike ride, running, etc. I do that all the time (not always purposefully b/c i do work out, bike, run all the time while in spandex) and no one really cares but i do still get some funny looks from people. It doesn't matter to me... It's rather funny to see everyone's reactions.
Once again, it is a huge help if you're with another person (preferably someone of the opposite gender) when you're wearing it. It helps you relax and you can get a kick out of it by talking to that person about it. I've done this with a number of girls I know and most of them think it's funny and completely cool. Don't worry about all these other people that think it's gay or homo... just have fun! Wear what you please!

What is a good summer legging for the guys?
Q. i love my Underarmour heat gear leggings but i prefer to have something with a liner, and maybe in a capri/knicker/ 1/2 , 3/4 tights? looking for compression but a normal tight will do, thanks

A. Underarmour has many styles of heat gear on their web site. Besides men's 7" compression shorts and full-length leggings, they do have capri length, but only listed under women. I don't see any reason why you couldn't still wear the capris, as long as you get the correct size. There's probably just not enough demand for them to make men's capris.

Q. Or can you just wear it cause you like the style? would it be stupid if yer not a biker?

A. There is a difference from a BIKER leather jacket and a leather jacket.
Bikers usually have either harley brand jackets or their jackets have patches on them etc. (according to my uncle) There are plain stylish leather jackets. i'd say leave the biker stuff alone if your not a biker...so yes, you would look stupid.

How do i clean a paint stain from white leather jacket?
Q. The stain is from a black show piece that i packed with the jacket when we were moving. Can i use detergent mixed with bleach?

A. NO , do not put detergent on it or bleach. If your jacket is dyed leather, you may use (fingernail polish remover) test in a place that is not visible, (inside pocket or under collar) put a small amount of polish remover on a q-tip and rub the jacket, if the jacket area get dark (real leather color) then your jacket is probably Painted and not dyed. a painted jacket must be cleaned by leather method, they will restore the color in the process of removing the black stain and soil. if the test does not remove the white of your jacket try again a small amount on a q-tip on the stain, check the q-tip to see if it is coming off, without damage.

How to remove white stains from leather jacket?
Q. I just bought a black leather jacket and I accidentally sprayed deodorant onto it. In just a few seconds, white stains can be seen on the jacket. I tried to remove it by using plain water but i didn't work. I just love the jacket so much and I really hope that anyone can help me right now by sharing some thoughts on the way to remove the stains. Thank you.

A. Wipe the area with a soft cloth doused with white vinegar, straight from the bottle. The vinegar will remove the deodorant.

And never use anything abrasive on leather. Abrasives can tear leather apart.

Good luck.
