Where can I buy a plus size thermal ski jacket?

Posted by bibou on Monday, December 31, 2012

Q. I'm a size 2X and can't find a warm thermal ski jacket anywhere. I am not going skiing but need a warm coat for Alaska weather to visit my nephew and grandneices. I heard that the thermal omnitech feature in the Columbia brand ski jackets are the best but the stores I visited only sell XL as the largest. Woolen or down coats aren't as warm as these omnitech ski jackets. Any recommendations?

A. Try:
Columbia online
Zappos.com (they seem to be able to help you find anything, even if they don't sell it)
Cabelas
REI (Recreational Equipment Inc).
LLBean
Eddie Bauer
Don't get stuck on wanting just that particular jacket. It's -45 in Fairbanks today and we're wearing down parkas, mittens, snowpants, hats and boots.

Where do you find good ski jackets for tall, thin girls?
Q. I can't find a ski jacket with long enough arms. I have a pretty small frame, but I'm tall and lanky. I'm tired of buying extra large jackets just so the sleeves are long enough. Then, the rest of the jacket just feels huge and bulky. Does anybody know of an online website where I could order one with longer arms?

A. try burton, the north face, columbia, or any other major ski/snowboard brand. they should carry jackets that fit you. i would recommend going down to your local snowboard shop and check with them.

burton: women outerwear: http://www.burton.com/Gear/Default.aspx#/womens/outerwear/over/

the north face: http://thenorthface.com/opencms/opencms/tnf/gear-shop-subcategory.jsp?category=21&site=NA&subcategory=211&language=en

columbia: http://columbia.com/SubCategory.aspx?top=2&cat=210&viewAll=false

if none of these work, try somewhere else: dogfunk.com, zumiez.com, theclickworldwide.com, ccs.com, or any other site.

good luck

How to get grease off a white ski jacket?
Q. My wife got a white ski jacket for Christmas and while wearing it out must have rubbed against a car or something that had black grease on it. We have washed it twice in the washer, but not much change. I gently took some liquid soap and tried to brush it in and rinse off with warm water, and still not much improvement. Does anyone know a good way to get black grease off of whites?

A. Rub some dishwashing liquid into the stain. Let that sit for about 20 minutes. Then launder as usual.

It doesn't matter which brand of dishwashing liquid you use. Most people recommend Dawn, but I've found that others work just as well...Joy, Palmolive, Ajax, even some store brands, like Kirkland.

Dishwashing liquid is made to remove grease. Laundry detergent is not. The dishwashing liquid will remove the grease.

What is a good waterproofness and moisture permeability of a ski jacket?
Q. I bought a ski jacket and it has a waterproofness of 20000 mmH2O and a moisture permeability of 4000g/m^2/24 hours. Is this good and what is the difference between the two?? Thanks for your answers

A. Waterproofness is a measure of keeping moisture out. Permeability is the ability to let sweat out without condensation. In both cases, the higher the number the better the performance.

My theory is that 10,000 is the minimum on both scales. If you can control your temperature by layering etc 4,000 permeability may be enough.

Are polypropylene good to wear beneath ski jacket?
Q. I am going to the snow this Sunday and I need to know is polypropylene long-sleeves any good?

I heard it's not recommended to wear cotton beneath your ski jacket as the moisture is absorbed and makes you wet.

What is good to wear under ski pants?

Also, what should you and shouldn't wear?

Thank you.

A. Polypropylene was one of the first synthetic fabrics for long underwear. It works well for sports like skiing. Early polypropylene had a reputation for retaining body odor. Newer fabrics and coatings help.

Polypropylene and similar fabrics are good for your base layer, tops and bottoms. I think that a fleece sweater is a great insulation layer. Don't forget to cover your head; I always wear a helmet.

Cotton is a poor choice for skiing. Wool is OK if you can tolerate it (it is too itchy for me).
