How to repair a large tear in a black leather jacket?

My son has a nice leather jacket that got caught in his bike chain when he had it tied around his waist biking home. The tear started at the cuff of the pocket and has torn 2 or 3 inches toward the front near the zipper

What's the best way to repair it? It does have a liner. Is anything better than just using duct tape on the inside?

How much water specifically will be needed for a black leather jacket to be visibly damaged?

Do you have to leave it to the point where it's lying in heavy rain overnight? Or soak it in a tub of water for a good 1-2 hours?

And how can you tell if it's damaged or not? Does it become stiff, coarse, grainy?

I have a black leather jacket that I have worn for 4 or 5 winters. It has not been treated to make it water resistant. I have worn it in the pouring ran and heavy snow and no visilble damage. Of course when I get home I usually hang it up where it can dry appropriatley.

What kind of shoes should I wear with my black leather jacket?

I was thinking ankle boots but then what colour should I get if i'm planning to wear it with dark denim skinnys? Got any pictures of some cool boots?

I haven't worn my leather jacket for about 3 years and it has been sitting in a cupboard during this time. Now I need to use it again as I'm back into cold climates but I noticed the jacket has become very stiff.

How do I make it soft again? Note: This jacket has goose down filling

Leathering soap ( I believe it is called leather soap ) will help soften it, and I have heard mink oil as well. I would say daily use? Good Luck =)

skinny jeans are a must plus they look great with leather jackets! try a graphic or band shirt or something. or even a solid colored shirt. anything will go.except poka dots lol.
